Guidelines on Behavior at the Grosse Pointe Public Library
In keeping with the mission of the Grosse Pointe Public Library, users are expected at all times to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner that does not interfere with others or that does not disturb the nature of library programs and services. The Library is intended for research, circulation of materials and reading. Private study rooms are not intended for users to conduct private business or meetings.
The following behavior, without limitation, is prohibited in the Grosse Pointe Public Library:
Remaining in the building after closing hours
Sleeping
Eating and/or drinking
Smoking or use of any tobacco products
Creating excessive noise or continuous talking that infringes on other patrons use of the library Abusive language, including vulgarisms, profanities and obscenities
Placing feet on tables or chairs
Rollerblading or skateboarding on Library property
Harassment, including physical, sexual or verbal abuse
Exhibitionism/voyeurism
Lewd behavior
Intoxication
Consuming or possessing alcoholic beverages or illegal substances
Possession of any dangerous weapons
Vandalism
Defacing of and/or improper use of library furniture or materials, including the removal of pages from books or magazines
Leaving children unattended
Striking the fish tank
Gambling
Violating city ordinances, state or federal laws, or specific library policies
Loitering within the building or in, at, or near entrances, exits or parking lots
Solicitation
Entering or remaining in the building without shirt and/or shoes
Misusing the restrooms
Playing radios or cassette or CD players without headphones
Bringing pets into the library or leaving animals at entrance/exit areas except those used to assist the handicapped or those participating in a Library program.
Rearranging furniture
Recreational games not provided by the library
Entering non-public areas
Illegal or unethical use of the Internet
Use of cellular telephones except in the vestibules only
Use of more than one card for timed computer sessions.
Bringing bicycles into Library buildings, securing bicycles to the handicapped ramp railing at any entrance or exit, or parking bicycles in such a manner that they obstruct patrons entering or exiting the Library.
All campaigning, petitioning, interviewing, or survey-taking in a manner which results in the disruption of normal Library activities.
Users who violate these guidelines may, in the discretion of the Library staff, be penalized by any one or more of the following sanctions:
1) violators may be given a verbal reprimand
2) violators may be asked to leave the Library building
3) violators (and, if the violator is a minor, the parents or guardians of the violator) may be sent a certified letter warning of revocation of Library privileges upon subsequent offenses.
4) violators who have received a letter of warning may be barred from use of the Library facilities for one day upon a first subsequent offense, 90 days upon a second subsequent offense, and one year upon a third subsequent offense.
